Developmental Play

They’re mobile now and can get from A to B faster than you can blink. They want to touch everything they probably shouldn’t, investigate everything they can reach, and somehow find something new to explore every single day.

And somewhere in the middle of it all, a quiet worry can creep in: Am I doing enough? Should there be more activities, more classes, more of the toys the internet promises are “developmental”?

Almost certainly not. At this age, some of the best learning happens through everyday life — having someone there to talk to them, get down on their level, and let them explore the world around them. Touching different textures, making a mess, trying things out and discovering what happens next.

Exploring the World (mostly by mouth)

A small number of open-ended things often beats a mountain of single-purpose toys. At this stage, the best toys are often the ones that encourage them to reach, grab, move, experiment and discover cause and effect.
