The FirstView SpermCount Sperm Concentration Rapid Test is a private, at-home male fertility screening test that helps you check whether sperm concentration falls within the normal fertile range. Using SP-10 sperm detection technology, it indicates whether the concentration in your sample is at or above 15 million sperm per millilitre — a threshold aligned with WHO reference values — or below it, with a clear line-based result in roughly five minutes.
It's worth being clear about what this test does and doesn't do. Sperm concentration is one important factor in male fertility, but it isn't the only one. This is a screening tool: it measures concentration only, and does not assess sperm movement (motility), shape (morphology), semen volume, or overall reproductive health. It's designed as an initial step you can take discreetly at home, and it can also be used to monitor changes over time.
How it works
- SP-10 detection technology: The test detects the SP-10 protein found on sperm, which is used to estimate whether concentration meets the 15 million per millilitre threshold.
- Threshold-based reading: Rather than giving an exact count, the test tells you whether your sample sits at or above the fertile-range threshold, or below it.
- Line-based result: A control line confirms the test ran correctly, while the presence or absence of a second test line indicates the concentration range.
How to use it
Read the complete instruction leaflet before you begin, and abstain from ejaculation for three to seven days before collecting your sample for a more representative result.
- Collect the entire semen sample directly into the supplied collection cup. Don't use a regular condom, lubricant, or another container unless the instructions confirm it's suitable.
- Allow the sample to liquefy for approximately 60 minutes.
- Use the supplied transfer device to collect 0.1 ml of semen.
- Add the measured sample to the supplied dilution buffer.
- Mix the sample as directed in the instructions.
- Add two drops of the prepared mixture to the sample well on the test cassette.
- Wait approximately five minutes.
- Read the result within the time window stated in the instruction leaflet.
Everything you need to collect, prepare and run the test comes in the kit, including the collection cup, transfer device, dilution buffer and workstation tray, so there's nothing extra to buy to get started.
Understanding your result
- Normal-range result: Two lines appear (a control line and a test line), indicating a sperm concentration of at least 15 million sperm per millilitre.
- Low-range result: Only the control line appears, indicating a concentration below 15 million sperm per millilitre.
- Invalid result: No control line appears — repeat the test with a new kit, following the instructions carefully.
Sperm production takes several weeks, and results can vary between samples. If a result is low, it may be useful to repeat testing after an appropriate interval, particularly following illness or lifestyle changes. For meaningful monitoring after a medical or lifestyle intervention, follow the timing recommended by a healthcare professional.
Best for
The FirstView SpermCount Sperm Concentration Rapid Test is a great option for those who:
- Want a private, convenient way to take an initial look at sperm concentration at home
- Prefer a fast, clear line-based result rather than a laboratory visit as a first step
- Would like to monitor changes in concentration over time
It may not be the right fit if you:
- Need a full semen analysis covering motility, morphology and volume
- Are looking for a diagnosis rather than a screening indication
Before you test
Avoid testing shortly after fever, significant illness, extreme stress, heavy alcohol intake, heat exposure, or recent medication changes, as these factors may temporarily affect sperm production or semen quality. Store the kit in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, moisture and excessive heat, don't freeze it, and keep the cassette sealed until immediately before use.
Pandylane Pro Tip: Give yourself the full liquefaction window before transferring the sample — rushing this step is one of the easiest ways to affect how the test reads.
Important
A result within the normal concentration range does not confirm fertility, and a low result does not confirm infertility. This test is a screening tool and does not diagnose fertility or infertility. It measures sperm concentration only. Always follow the supplied instructions and consult a qualified healthcare professional regarding low, uncertain, or concerning results — and in particular if results remain low on repeat testing, you have been trying to conceive without success, there is testicular pain, swelling or a lump, difficulty with erection or ejaculation, a history of undescended testes, testicular injury, surgery, infection, chemotherapy or hormone treatment, or you have concerns about fertility despite a normal result. Keep out of reach of children.
