Calpol Paediatric Strawberry-Flavoured Syrup

Calpol Paediatric Strawberry-Flavoured Syrup is an alcohol-free liquid medicine containing paracetamol, used for the symptomatic relief of mild to moderate pain and fever in infants and children from 3 months of age. Each 5 ml of this pink, uniform suspension contains 120 mg of paracetamol, and it comes in a 100 ml bottle with a child-resistant cap.

It's the kind of thing many parents like to have on hand for the discomfort that comes with teething, toothache, a sore throat, headache, colds and flu. The strawberry flavour is there to make dosing a little easier when a little one is already out of sorts, and the medicine is alcohol free.

What it's for

Paracetamol is an antipyretic and analgesic — meaning it works to help bring down a raised temperature and to ease pain. It's worth remembering that fever is a measured sign rather than a diagnosis in itself, and easing the temperature doesn't treat whatever is causing it. How to Use

Shake the bottle well before use, and measure each dose accurately using the supplied measuring device. The medicine may be given three to four times daily, provided there is an interval of at least four hours between doses. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

Not recommended for infants under 3 months unless specifically directed by a doctor. Store in a well-closed container at or below 25°C, protect from light, minimise exposure to air, and keep the cap tightly closed.

Do not give this medicine together with any other product containing paracetamol. Too much paracetamol can cause serious liver damage, even if the child appears well, so always check the active ingredients in cough, cold, flu and pain medicines before combining products. Paracetamol overdose is a medical emergency: if more than the recommended dose has been given, seek urgent medical help immediately — even if the child feels well and has no symptoms — and take the bottle or packaging with you.

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before use if the child has liver or kidney disease, is severely underweight or malnourished, is taking other medicines, has a known sugar intolerance (this product contains sugar), or has previously reacted to colourants or preservatives. Stop use and seek urgent care if signs of an allergic reaction occur, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, severe rash, or blistering or peeling skin.

Do not use continuously for more than three days without consulting a doctor. Consult a doctor if no relief is obtained with the recommended dose, if fever or pain persists or worsens, if the child is unusually sleepy or difficult to wake, is not drinking or has fewer wet nappies, has repeated vomiting or difficulty breathing, develops a rash, or if you are unsure of the correct dose.
