The Beurer FT 85 Non-Contact Thermometer is an infrared thermometer that lets you check body temperature without touching the skin, so you can take a reading without waking or unsettling a sleeping baby. Held at a measuring distance of just 2–3 cm from the forehead, it gives a reading in seconds and displays it in either degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit — a practical option for keeping an eye on a fever when speed and minimal disturbance matter most.
Beyond body temperature, the FT 85 also measures ambient and surface temperature, so the same device can be used to check the temperature of a room, a bath or a bottle of expressed milk. It is registered as a medical device and is backed by Beurer's German engineering and a 5-year warranty.
How it Works
- Non-contact infrared measurement: The sensor reads temperature from a short distance of 2–3 cm rather than through skin contact, which keeps measuring hygienic and helps reduce the disturbance and cross-contact of a contact reading.
- Multiple measurement modes: As well as body temperature at the forehead, the FT 85 measures ambient and surface temperature, so it doubles as a way to check room, bath or bottle temperature.
- Temperature alarm: A signal from 38 °C flags a raised reading, which is a device threshold rather than a diagnosis — a raised or unexpected reading should always be considered alongside your child's age, condition and your own judgement.
- 60 memory spaces: The thermometer stores up to 60 body-temperature readings, making it easier to track how a temperature is changing over time.
Reading detail and accuracy
Beurer states a measurement accuracy of ±0.2 °C for forehead readings within the 34 °C–42.2 °C range, and ±4% or ±2 °C for object measurement between 0 °C and 80 °C. The display shows readings in °C or °F, and an automatic switch-off helps preserve battery life between uses. An optional acoustic signal lets you know when a measurement is complete, which you can switch off when you'd rather keep things quiet.
Best For
The Beurer FT 85 Non-Contact Thermometer is a good option for parents who:
- Want to check a temperature without touching or waking a sleeping or distressed baby
- Prefer a quick reading and the option of a silent measurement
- Would find a single device useful for checking room, bath and bottle temperatures as well as body temperature
It may not be the best fit if you:
- Prefer a contact thermometer validated for the armpit, which is often recommended for very young infants
How to Use
Follow the instructions supplied with the device. For a body reading, hold the sensor at the recommended measuring distance of 2–3 cm from the forehead. Because non-contact readings can be affected by distance, angle, sweat, hair, head coverings and moving between hot and cold environments, take care to position it consistently, and repeat an unexpected reading before acting on it. Make sure you are using body mode rather than the object or surface mode when measuring temperature.
Pandylane Pro Tip: If a reading looks higher or lower than expected, give your child a few minutes to settle after coming in from outdoors or a warm bath, then take the reading again — a stable environment and consistent placement make for a more reliable result.
Disclaimer: A thermometer measures temperature; it does not diagnose the cause or severity of illness, and the fever alarm is a device threshold rather than clinical advice. Very young infants and any child who looks seriously unwell need prompt clinical assessment regardless of the number on the display. Always follow the instructions supplied with the device.
