Teejel Teething Soothing Gel is a topical oral gel formulated to help relieve pain and inflammation affecting the lining of the mouth. It's often reached for during teething, but it isn't only a teething gel — it may also be used for mouth ulcers, denture sores, cuts caused by braces, an inflamed tongue, and other painful areas of the oral mucosa, according to the product instructions.
The sugar-free formula contains choline salicylate, which has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, and comes in a 10 g tube that's easy to keep in a bathroom cabinet or nappy bag. As a medicine that numbs and soothes soft tissue in the mouth, it's suitable for infants, children and adults — but the amount and frequency differ by age, so the directions matter.
How to Use
Wash your hands thoroughly before application, then apply the gel to the tender area of the buccal mucosa (the lining of the cheeks and the inside of the lips where they touch the teeth) with a clean finger or finger-stall.
- Adults and older children: apply approximately 1 cm of gel.
- Infants up to 2 years: apply approximately 0.5 cm of gel.
- Massage the gel gently into the tender area.
- Repeat three to four times daily, preferably before meals and at bedtime.
Use only as directed on the current product label or by a healthcare professional. Do not exceed the recommended amount or frequency.
Storage
Store at or below 25°C, keep the cap tightly closed, and protect from excessive heat and direct sunlight. Do not use after the expiry date, and keep out of reach of children.
Important Safety Information
Teejel Gel is for topical use in the mouth only, and is intended for short-term relief of minor oral pain and inflammation. It contains alcohol (38.2% m/m). Do not apply to large areas of broken tissue, and avoid swallowing excessive amounts. Do not use if there is a known allergy or sensitivity to salicylates, aspirin, choline salicylate, or any ingredient in the product.
Because the product contains a salicylate, seek professional advice before use in: very young infants, children with viral illnesses, children with bleeding disorders, children taking anticoagulants, anyone with a history of aspirin-sensitive asthma, or anyone taking other salicylate-containing medicines. Stop use and seek advice if irritation, swelling, rash, wheezing, or worsening pain develops.
Consult a healthcare professional if pain persists or worsens, a mouth ulcer lasts longer than two weeks, there are multiple or recurrent ulcers, the child refuses feeds or fluids, there is fever, facial swelling, signs of infection, or heavily bleeding gums, if the baby is younger than 3 months, or if you are unsure whether the symptoms are due to teething. Teething does not usually cause high fever, persistent diarrhoea, severe lethargy, or significant vomiting — these symptoms require medical assessment. This gel is not a substitute for medical or dental assessment where symptoms are severe, persistent, recurrent, infected, or otherwise concerning.
