The NUK Trainer Cup 230ml is a first cup designed to help babies from around 6 months make the gentle move from breast or bottle to drinking on their own. Its soft spout and easy-grip handles are shaped for early attempts, so those first sips feel manageable rather than frustrating — for baby and for you. This is the Crab colourway from the NUK Evolution Cup Range.
Cup practice usually begins around the time solids are introduced, and a trainer or learner cup is one way to give a baby something they can hold and tip themselves, with a caregiver close by. This 230 ml cup holds a useful amount for home or a short outing, and the few, simple parts mean it doesn't add much to your washing-up pile.
A soft spout for early sips
The extra-soft drinking spout is designed to be gentle on the gums and palate, which suits the stage where a baby is still getting used to something other than a teat. Because it's a soft spout, it works well before teeth come through; NUK notes that once teeth emerge, a bite-resistant hard-spout cup of a similar shape can carry the transition further.
Made for little hands
The ergonomically shaped handles give small hands something easy to grip, which helps a baby bring the cup to their mouth and build coordination and independence. A ventilation valve helps keep the flow smooth and, per NUK, helps reduce the amount of air baby swallows while drinking. The cup is described by NUK as 100% leak-proof, so it can travel in a nappy bag without the worry of spills — though, as with any valved cup, that closure means baby does a little more work to draw the drink out.
Part of the NUK Evolution Cup Range
The Trainer Cup is compatible with the other elements of the NUK Evolution Cup Range, so the base can carry on as your child's skills grow. The range moves from the Trainer Cup for first sips, to the Magic Cup for 360° drinking, and on to the Action Cup for toddlers on the go — swapping the top rather than buying a whole new cup each time. It's worth knowing that NUK cups and spouts are only compatible within their corresponding range.
Materials and cleaning
The cup is made from robust, BPA-free polypropylene (PP) — light enough for a baby to handle, but able to take the knocks and drops that come with the territory. It's built from few parts that come apart and go back together easily, is suitable for the dishwasher, and complies with the European safety standard EN14350.
How to use and care for it
- Before first use, place the cup in boiling water for 5 minutes, using plenty of water to avoid damage.
- Take the cup apart into its component parts for any boiling or steam-sterilising.
- Clean thoroughly with a mild washing-up liquid, and sterilise before each further use — the NUK Steriliser is one option.
- Reassemble and fill to a comfortable amount for your child's stage.
Best For
The NUK Trainer Cup 230ml is a good option for parents who:
- Are starting cup practice around the introduction of solids and want a soft-spout first cup
- Want handles their baby can grip while learning to drink independently
- Prefer a closable, leak-conscious cup for the nappy bag or car
- Like the idea of a system that grows through different tops rather than buying a new cup each stage
It may not be the best fit if you:
- Are ready to move to a hard-spout, straw or 360° cup
- Want a cup that mixes and matches with tops from outside the NUK Evolution range
