The Medela Freestyle Hands-free Breast Pump is Medela's first wearable, hands-free double electric breast pump — designed so you can carry on with your day while you express. Lightweight collection cups sit discreetly inside your bra, while the compact, pocket-sized motor stays separate, so there's no bulky unit weighing on your breast. If you're looking for a wearable pump that lets you multitask, move around and keep both hands free, this is a setup built around that kind of routine.
Each collection cup weighs just 76g — amongst the lightest available — and holds up to 150 ml (5 oz) of milk. Because the cups are anatomically shaped and the motor lives in your pocket rather than on your chest, the design is aimed at reducing the compression of breast tissue and keeping longer sessions more comfortable. The cups are made to fit into most nursing bras, so you don't need a special garment to use them.
How the pump works
- 2-Phase Expression technology: The pump mimics baby's natural sucking rhythm — faster at first to stimulate milk flow, then slower to express milk — which is designed for efficient, comfortable pumping.
- Nine vacuum levels per phase: You can choose up to nine levels of vacuum in both the stimulation and expression phases, so you can dial the settings in to what feels right for you.
- 105° breast shield angle: The breast shields use a research-based 105° angle rather than the more typical 90°, designed to create a more natural fit and reduce pressure on the breast.
- Closed system tubing: The tubing is a closed system, so milk cannot get into the tube when the pump is used as instructed.
- Transparent cups with a side scale: The clear design lets you align your nipple and see whether milk is flowing, and the side scale indicator makes it easy to keep an eye on how much you've collected.
Medela researchers found that double pumping obtains 18% more milk on average compared with single pumping, which is part of why a double setup can suit parents who want to make the most of each session.
Power and the Medela Family app
The Freestyle Hands-free runs on a built-in, USB-C rechargeable battery, so you're not tied to a plug point. A full charge gives roughly 2 hours of battery life — an average of about eight 15-minute sessions. It also connects to the Medela Family app, where you can create a personalised profile and track your sessions. You don't need WiFi to pump, though app functionality may be limited without it; sessions pumped offline sync automatically the next time you connect, so your data isn't lost.
Cleaning and everyday use
The collection cups come apart into just three parts, so they're quick to assemble and simple to clean — and all parts are dishwasher safe. Sanitise the parts before first use and once daily, wash them before first use and after each use, and let everything dry completely on a clean towel. The inside of the tubing should never be cleaned or rinsed; if the outside gets dirty, wipe it with a damp cloth. When a cup fills up, you can pause with the play/pause button, pour the milk into a breast milk-safe bottle or storage bag, and carry on.
Fit and compatibility
The pump includes both 21 mm and 24 mm hands-free cup breast shields to help you find a comfortable fit. The motor also works with Medela's classic PersonalFit Flex parts (sold separately), so if you already own them — or would like the flexibility to switch between the two — the same motor integrates with both.
Best For
The Medela Freestyle Hands-free Breast Pump is a great option for parents who:
- Want to express hands-free and keep moving — sitting, walking around or tending to baby
- Value a discreet in-bra setup that works with most nursing bras
- Pump regularly and want a rechargeable pump they can use away from a plug point
- Like adjustable suction across both stimulation and expression phases
- Want to track sessions through an app
It may not be the best fit if you:
- Need to pump while bending right over or during intense exercise (the cups have a pouring spout at the top that milk could spill through)
- Would prefer a pump that stops automatically when the cups are full — this one doesn't, so you monitor the level yourself using the side scale
Good to know
This is a single-user device — for hygiene and safety reasons it can only be used by one person. Don't store expressed milk in the cups; pour it into a milk-safe storage container after pumping. Once the tamper seal is broken, the pump can't be returned unless faulty. The PersonalFit Flex parts mentioned above are sold separately.
Pandylane Pro Tip: If your pump ever stops responding or the display won't light up, press and hold the On/Off button for seven to ten seconds to reset it.
