The Lansinoh Nipple Shields are ultra-thin silicone breastfeeding aids designed to help with short-term latch difficulties. Placed over the nipple during a feed, a nipple shield can offer temporary support in situations such as feeding a premature, small, or unwell baby, or where a mother has flat or inverted nipples, an overactive let-down, or a baby with a tongue-tie or lip-tie that is still being assessed or treated. They come as a set of two, with a protective storage case for keeping them clean between feeds.
Made from 100% silicone that is BPA free and BPS free, the shields have a soft, flexible, ultra-thin design and a special cut-out shape that helps maximise skin-to-skin contact while feeding. They are intended for short-term breastfeeding support, and are best used alongside guidance from a breastfeeding professional so that the underlying cause of the feeding difficulty can be identified and addressed rather than only worked around.
How it Works
- Ultra-thin silicone: The thin, flexible silicone sits over the nipple to provide a temporary feeding interface while keeping baby close to the breast.
- Cut-out shape: A special cut-out in the shield is designed to maximise skin-to-skin contact between baby and breast during the feed.
- Fit matters: The shields are available in 20 mm and 24 mm sizes, and the right size depends on your nipple diameter, comfort, and milk transfer — a shield that is too small may pinch or restrict the nipple, while one that is too large can be harder for baby to latch onto effectively.
How to Use
- Wash your hands.
- Soak the nipple shield in clean hot water for one to two minutes.
- Remove it carefully and allow it to cool to a safe temperature.
- If needed, apply a small amount of Lansinoh HPA Lanolin Nipple Cream around the rim to help it stay in place.
- Partially turn the shield inside out by bringing the longer edges towards the nipple.
- Centre the shield opening over the nipple.
- Press the rim towards the breast while allowing the shield to turn right side out.
- Draw as much of the nipple as comfortably possible into the opening.
- Ensure the shield sits securely and comfortably.
- Feed as normal.
During feeding, check that baby has a deep latch over both the shield and the breast tissue, that you can hear or see swallowing, that milk is visible inside the shield, that feeding is comfortable, and that the breast feels softer afterwards. If feeding remains painful or milk transfer seems poor, seek breastfeeding support.
Cleaning and Storage
Wash the nipple shields after every use and clean according to the manufacturer's instructions. Allow them to dry completely before placing them in the protective case, and keep the case clean and dry. Inspect the shields regularly and replace them if they become damaged, torn, stretched, sticky, or discoloured.
Best For
The Lansinoh Nipple Shields are a good option for parents who:
- Are working through a short-term latch difficulty and want temporary support at the breast
- Are feeding a premature, small, or unwell baby, or managing flat or inverted nipples or an overactive let-down
- Have a baby with a tongue-tie or lip-tie that is still being assessed or treated
- Want a set of two with a case for hygienic, convenient storage
They may not be the best fit if you are looking for a long-term feeding solution, as nipple shields are generally intended for short-term use and ongoing use should be reviewed with a professional.
Disclaimer
Lansinoh Nipple Shields are breastfeeding aids intended to provide temporary support with selected latch difficulties. They are not a substitute for professional breastfeeding assessment. Use them under the guidance of a qualified breastfeeding professional, particularly where there are concerns about milk transfer, weight gain, tongue-tie, nipple trauma, or milk supply. Nipple shields are generally intended for short-term use, and an unsuitable shield or poor latch may affect milk transfer or milk supply. Seek prompt breastfeeding support if baby is not gaining weight, feeds are very long or ineffective, baby remains unsettled after feeds, wet nappies decrease, nipple pain persists, there are signs of mastitis, the shield repeatedly slips or collapses, or you are unsure when or how to stop using it.
Pandylane Pro Tip: A dab of Lansinoh HPA Lanolin Nipple Cream around the rim can help the shield stay in place — a small step that often makes fitting the shield feel less fiddly during those first tender feeds.
