The ergoPouch Cocoon Swaddle Bag 1.0 TOG is a zip-up baby swaddle that keeps your newborn snugly wrapped without any complicated folding, tucking or re-wrapping in the dark. Designed to be both easy to use and difficult to escape from, it gives you a straightforward way to swaddle from day one, while a two-way zip and arm poppers make it a practical, adaptable choice as your baby grows.
Being TOG-rated means the warmth is measured, so you can match the swaddle to your room. At 1.0 TOG, this is a lighter swaddle intended for warmer conditions — it can be used on its own from room temperatures of around 20–24°C and above, with no blankets needed in the bassinet or cot. If the room is cooler, you simply layer clothing underneath. Each Cocoon comes with a free room thermometer and "what to wear" guide to help you dress your baby appropriately for the temperature.
How the Cocoon Swaddle Bag works
- Stretch with structure: Made from GOTS certified organic cotton with a touch of elastane (95% organic cotton, 5% elastane), it's firm enough to help contain the startle reflex while still stretching to allow movement for healthy growth.
- Room to breathe and settle: The stretch allows full chest expansion when breathing, and gives your baby space to move their hands into a self-settling position inside the swaddle.
- Hip-healthy bell shape: The bell-shaped bottom is approved by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute as hip-healthy, giving the hips and legs room to move and supporting proper development of the hip and shoulder joints.
- Two-way zip: Opening from the bottom lets you change a nappy or cool baby down with minimal disruption, then zip closed again.
- Gentle on delicate skin: The soft, breathable organic cotton is certified non-toxic and dyed with water-based dyes, making it gentle on newborn skin and skin prone to eczema breakouts, while the zip enclosure sits away from delicate skin.
Grows from swaddle to sleeping bag
When your baby starts showing signs of rolling, the arm poppers on the shoulders let you convert the Cocoon from an arms-in swaddle to an arms-out sleeping bag. It's a good idea to release one arm at a time over several days to ease the transition. If your newborn simply doesn't like being swaddled, it's also safe to use the Cocoon with their arms out from the very beginning.
How to use
- Lay the Cocoon on a flat, low surface with the zip open and the arm studs closed.
- Lay your baby on top, tuck their legs into the swaddle, and zip up with their hands in your preferred position — by their sides or across the chest.
- To change a nappy or cool baby down, unzip from the bottom to release the legs and lower torso, then zip closed again when you're finished.
- Layer clothing underneath for extra warmth as needed.
- To transition to arms-out once your baby shows signs of rolling, open the studs on the shoulders, ideally one arm at a time over several days.
Best For
The ergoPouch Cocoon Swaddle Bag 1.0 TOG is a great option for parents who:
- Want a simple zip-up swaddle rather than a wrap that needs folding
- Are dressing a newborn for warmer room temperatures of around 20–24°C and above
- Prefer a swaddle that later converts to an arms-out sleeping bag
- Like the convenience of a two-way zip for night-time nappy changes
- Are looking for GOTS certified organic cotton against sensitive or eczema-prone skin
It may not be the best fit if you:
- Need a warmer option for cooler rooms — a higher TOG rating would suit better
- Prefer an arms-free garment for a baby who is already rolling (use it in arms-out mode)
Good to know
The 0–3 month size has a pouch length of 60cm and suits a baby weighing 3–6kg (roughly 62cm tall). Please choose the size by your baby's weight, and don't size up until they meet the weight requirement for the next size. For a correct, safe fit, the Cocoon has a firm fit around the neck, shoulders and chest to stop your little one slipping inside — you should be able to fit two fingers inside the neck opening. Always place your baby to sleep in a safe-sleep environment.
Because this swaddle is made from organic cotton and is not treated with chemical fire retardants, it carries a High Fire Danger warning under AS/NZS 1249:2014 — keep it away from heat and flame. It's machine washable on a gentle cold cycle with mild detergent.
Pandylane Pro Tip: Keep the free room thermometer and "what to wear" guide near the cot. Adjusting the layers underneath the swaddle to the room temperature is often the easiest way to keep your baby comfortable, since the 1.0 TOG rating stays the same.
