The ergoPouch Butterfly Cardi is a transition aid designed to help your baby move from swaddled to arms-out sleeping. It's worn over your baby's existing swaddle or sleeping bag, giving you a gentle, gradual way to ease the change once your swaddled baby begins to show signs of rolling — the point at which it's time to move away from arms-in swaddling for their safety.
Rather than going straight from fully wrapped to arms-free, the Butterfly Cardi lets you take it one step at a time. Its unique arm pockets recreate the sense of containment your baby is used to from swaddling, so the new sensation feels familiar rather than abrupt. With their arms tucked into the pockets, your baby also has access to their hands for self-soothing.
How the transition works
The idea is to release one arm at a time. By bringing one arm out of the swaddle and into a Butterfly Cardi pocket, then the other over the following days, you gradually ease your baby towards sleeping fully arms-out — a process the design supports over roughly 10 days, so they can get used to the change as you go. For babies who still have a strong startle reflex, the press studs can be adjusted to create a firmer fit around the torso.
Comfortable, considered fit
The fabric has super stretch in all directions, keeping your baby comfortable and allowing for full chest expansion when breathing. The way the Cardi sits on the body is designed not to interrupt your baby's natural sleeping position, supporting healthy hip joint development. At a 0.2 TOG rating, it's a light layer intended for use over any sleeping bag, in any room temperature.
Made with sensitive skin in mind
The Butterfly Cardi is made from GOTS certified organic jersey cotton and dyed with non-toxic, water-based dyes. It's skin-friendly and suitable for babies with eczema and dry skin conditions.
How to Use
- Wear the Butterfly Cardi over your baby's existing swaddle or sleeping bag.
- Gently release one arm out of the swaddle and into a Cardi arm pocket.
- Over roughly 10 days, ease your baby towards sleeping fully arms-out, letting them get used to the new sensation as you go.
- Adjust the press studs for a firmer fit around the torso if your baby still has a strong startle reflex.
Best For
The ergoPouch Butterfly Cardi is a great option for parents who:
- Have a swaddled baby showing signs of rolling and need a way to move towards arms-out sleeping
- Want a gradual, one-arm-at-a-time approach rather than a sudden change
- Are looking for a light layer to wear over an existing sleeping bag
- Prefer organic cotton and are mindful of sensitive or eczema-prone skin
It may not be the right fit if you:
- Are looking for a swaddle itself — the Cardi is a transition aid, not a swaddle
- Need a size outside the 2–6 month range
Disclaimer
The Butterfly Cardi is not to be used as an alternative for swaddling. As with all sleep products, follow current safe-sleep guidance: place baby on their back on a firm, flat, level surface, and stop using an arms-in swaddle once your baby shows signs of trying to roll.
