The Dreambaby Rapid Response Clinical Thermometer is a 3-in-1 digital thermometer for the whole family, giving you a quick, accurate temperature reading orally, underarm (axillary) or rectally. When taken orally, it delivers a reading in around 10 seconds — underarm and rectal readings take a little longer — so you can check on a niggly, warm little one without a long, unsettling wait. It's a practical addition to your getting-ready-for-baby checklist and a reassuring thing to have on hand for those moments when you suspect a temperature.
A built-in fever alert sounds a rapid beep when a raised temperature is detected, and the large digital display is easy to read at a glance. The flexible tip adds comfort during use, and the thermometer switches between Celsius and Fahrenheit — worth knowing, since it arrives set to Fahrenheit and needs changing to Celsius for South African use. It contains no mercury and comes with a protective tip casing for hygienic storage between uses.
How it Works
- 3-in-1 measurement: One thermometer covers oral, underarm and rectal readings, so you can choose the method that suits your child's age and comfort.
- Fever alert: If the temperature reads above 37.8°C, a rapid-beep tone sounds to flag a fever; a normal reading below 37.8°C gives a single tone.
- "Lo" on start-up: When you switch it on, the display shows "Lo" because the sensor is reading air temperature, which is lower than body temperature. This is normal for digital thermometers — once placed for measurement, it gives an accurate reading.
- Memory function: The previous reading shows briefly the next time you power on, so you can compare against your last check.
How to Use
Before you need it, test the thermometer when it first arrives so you're comfortable operating it under stress, and switch the display to Celsius for South African use (power off, then press and hold the power button for up to 5 seconds until the display moves from "Lo°F" to "Lo°C", then release).
- Press the ON/OFF button once — the display shows all symbols, then "Lo" with a flashing °C or °F.
- Place the tip using your chosen method: under the tongue with the mouth closed and breathing through the nose (oral); in the centre of the armpit with the arm pressed against the body (underarm); or gently inserting only the tip 1–1.5 cm into the rectum, coated with petroleum jelly (rectal, the most accurate method for newborns and infants under 3 months).
- Hold securely and wait — around 8–10 seconds for oral, and 30 seconds to a minute for underarm and rectal readings.
- The thermometer beeps rapidly once a stable reading is reached, and the fever alert sounds if a fever is detected.
- Press the ON/OFF button to switch off, or leave it to auto-off after a few minutes.
After every use, clean the tip with a soft cloth and alcohol swab, rinse with cool water, and let it air-dry before returning it to its protective casing. Don't immerse the whole unit in water, and store it somewhere dry, cool and out of direct sunlight.
Battery
The thermometer comes with an LR41 alkaline battery already fitted, with a lifespan of around 1000 uses. Replace it when the display fades, becomes unclear or stops registering, and it helps to keep a spare on hand.
Best For
The Dreambaby Rapid Response Clinical Thermometer is a great option for parents who:
- Want a single thermometer that covers oral, underarm and rectal readings for different ages
- Would like a mercury-free digital option with a fever alert and an easy-to-read display
- Are building a baby-ready kit and want something the whole family can use
Disclaimer
Always supervise children while using the thermometer, and don't allow them to chew or bite any part of it. Keep the battery out of reach of children — swallowing a battery could be fatal. If a fever is detected or the temperature reads above 37.8°C, seek medical advice. This thermometer is a screening tool and does not replace professional medical assessment.
Pandylane Pro Tip: Test it and switch it to Celsius the day it arrives, not the night you actually need it — fumbling with settings while comforting a warm, unsettled baby is the last thing you want, and having a spare LR41 battery tucked in the drawer saves you a scramble later.
