If pumping feels uncomfortable — or you've never been quite sure your flange actually fits — a flange insert is often the simple fix. Our Breast Shield Insert (aka Flange Insert) is a soft silicone insert that sits inside your existing breast pump flange, letting you match the fit to your actual nipple diameter rather than whatever size came standard with your pump.
They're compatible with all 'hard' flange cups, including Spectra, Eufy, Momcozy, Youha, Freemie, Imani, Medela and many more. Available in six sizes — 13mm, 15mm, 17mm, 19mm, 21mm and 24mm — so there's a wide range to choose the size that would work best for you.
Benefits
- A More Comfortable Fit: Standard flanges are one-size, and if yours doesn't match your nipple diameter, pumping can mean rubbing, pinching, or tissue being pulled too far into the tunnel — all things a properly sized insert can fix.
- No Need to Replace Your Whole Pump: An insert lets you correct the fit of the flange you already have, rather than buying an entirely new pump or shield set.
- A Size Range Most Pumps Don't Cover: Most pumps ship with one standard flange size. Inserts open up smaller sizes for anyone whose fit falls outside that default.
- A Way to Rule Out Fit as the Problem: If pumping hurts, it's not always clear whether it's technique, supply, or simply the wrong size flange — trying an insert is a low-cost way to test whether fit is the issue.
- Possibly More Effective Milk Removal: Some research suggests a well-fitted flange can support slightly more effective milk removal during a session, though the evidence here is limited and it's not a guarantee of more milk.
- An Affordable Way to Test Sizing: Inserts cost a fraction of a full new set of breast shields, making them a low-risk way to find your size before committing further.
Finding Your Fit
These inserts are designed to slot inside a standard 24/25mm flange — the size most breast pumps ship with. If your pump uses a different flange size, check compatibility first:
- 13mm insert: does not fit into a 28mm flange
- 15mm insert: fits loosely into a 28mm flange
- 24mm insert: fits into 28–32mm flanges
Once you know the insert fits your flange, choose the size closest to your nipple diameter. You can read more in our articles.
Why the Right Size Matters
A flange that's too big or too small can turn pumping into something you dread rather than something you get through. Rubbing, pinching, or a nipple drawn too far into the tunnel are all signs it's time to size up or down.
Comfort is the clearest, best-supported benefit of a properly fitted insert — research consistently shows individualised sizing is more comfortable than a one-size-fits-all flange. Some studies have also found a well-fitted flange can support more effective milk removal during a session.
Best For
Our Breast Shield Insert is a great option for parents who:
- Find their standard flange uncomfortable but don't want to replace their whole pump
- Have a smaller nipple diameter than the standard 24mm flange most pumps come with
- Want to try a different size without committing to a full new set of breast shields
Pandylane Pro Tip: Not sure which size to start with? Measure your nipple diameter (base of the nipples, not the areolas) in millimetres, and choose the insert closest to that (above, not below). Measure both sides, because they can be different.
