The Beurer FT 09 Digital Thermometer is a clinical contact thermometer for measuring body temperature at home, helping you recognise and track a fever in your little one or anyone else in the family. It uses contact-measurement technology to take a reading orally (in the mouth), rectally, or under the armpit (axillary), so you can choose the method that suits the situation. An oral reading takes approximately 30 seconds, and an audible signal lets you know both when the thermometer is ready and when the measurement is complete.
It's a mercury-free, glass-free digital thermometer that's waterproof and can be disinfected between uses, which makes it practical to share across household members. It's approved as a medical device in both the European Union and South Africa, and comes with a 5-year Beurer warranty. Do keep in mind that a thermometer estimates temperature to help you monitor a fever — it doesn't diagnose the cause or severity of an illness, and very young infants or anyone who seems seriously unwell needs prompt medical attention regardless of the number on the display.
How it works
- Contact-measurement technology: The probe tip is held against the body until the reading settles, giving a clinical measurement at the site you've chosen.
- Automatic self-test: The thermometer runs a self-test before each use, and "Lo" alongside the °C symbol with an acoustic signal tells you it's ready to measure (this is not a low-battery warning).
- Fever alert: An acoustic fever alarm sounds from 37.8 °C to flag an elevated temperature early. This is a device threshold to prompt a closer look, not a diagnosis.
- Measurement accuracy: Accurate to 0.1 °C across the 35.5 °C–42.0 °C range, and to 0.2 °C between 32.0 °C–35.4 °C and 42.1 °C–42.9 °C. "Lo" or "Hi" on its own means the measured temperature is below or above the range.
How to use
Clean and disinfect the thermometer before and after each use — but never disinfect it by boiling. Always wait for the acoustic signal before removing the device from the body; leaving it in place a little longer after the signal gives a more accurate reading.
- Rectal: The most accurate of the three methods.
- Oral: The next most accurate, taking roughly 30 seconds.
- Armpit (axillary): Less accurate and best kept for quick checks. For a more reliable result, leave the thermometer in place for at least 5 minutes, even after the acoustic signal sounds.
There will always be some difference in readings between the different body sites, so it helps to use the same method consistently when you're tracking a temperature over time.
Everyday practicalities
A large 3-digit display keeps the reading easy to see, and a single memory space stores the last measured value so you can compare it to your next check. The automatic switch-off helps save battery, and the digital readings flash on the screen when it's time to change the battery. It comes with a protective cap to keep the tip clean and safe between uses, and a 1.5V LR41 battery is included, with an approximate 2-year battery life.
Best for
The Beurer FT 09 Digital Thermometer is a great option for parents who:
- Want a first-aid essential to keep on hand for monitoring fever at home
- Prefer the flexibility of oral, rectal or armpit measurement in one device
- Value a mercury-free, waterproof thermometer that's easy to disinfect and share
It may not be the best fit if you:
- Want a no-contact reading you can take without disturbing a sleeping baby
- Prefer an ear (tympanic) or forehead device
Good to know
Store and use the thermometer within safe ambient temperatures (roughly 10 °C–40 °C), and allow it to acclimatise for about 15 minutes if it has been exposed to extreme temperatures. Avoid dropping, biting or bending it, and protect it from knocks, high heat and direct sunlight. Do not use rechargeable batteries. The device may malfunction near other powered electronics, so keep it away from other electronic devices while measuring. As with any thermometer, use it alongside how your child looks and feels, and seek professional care when their age or condition warrants it.
